Brewing Attempt #1
By Mike | July 8, 2007
So I was all set to finally start brewing today. I had all my equipment and ingredients, I’d reviewed the steps about a billion times, and had nothing else to do today. A perfect day for brewing.
I started re-inventorying my equipment just to make sure I knew where everything was, and when I came to the hydrometer I figured it might be a good idea for me to practice using it once or twice before I started so that I would know what I was doing.
For those of you who don’t know, a hydrometer is what is used to measure the specific gravity of a liquid, which you can then use to determine the alcohol content. It looks like giant thermometer and you float it in your beer and take a reading based on the level of the liquid.
The only problem is I don’t have anything to put it in. It’s about a foot tall and the only thing I have that is tall enough to use is a flower vase. Somehow I don’t think taking out a liter of beer to fill the vase every time I need to take a reading is going to leave me with very much to drink when I’m all done. Notice how on that link above they mention that the hydrometer is included with all their equipment kits, but they conveniently leave out the fact that you need one of these or these to actually use it.
So now I have no idea when I’m going to be able to try again since my next few weekends are all looking to be quite booked.
