IPA
By Mike | May 4, 2007
I’m becoming a big fan of IPA’s. Until very recently I didn’t care for them as I felt they were overly bitter, but lately I’ve really begun to enjoy a good IPA. Maybe its because I’m starting to understand why they taste like they do, and I’m developing a better understanding of beer in general that I can appreciate IPAs. Then again maybe I shouldn’t try to write intelligent posts when I’m drunk.
This may or may not be accurate, but for those of you who are not yet connoisseurs, IPA stands for India Pale Ale and is based on what England would use to send to its troops in India. IPA’s are more bitter and higher in alcohol content than other styles of beer because it had to be preserved long enough to make the trip from England to India. The extra hops and increased alcohol helped preserve the beer, but also made it more bitter than most other varieties.
I picked up a 6-pack of Dogfish Head IPA on my way home from work today at my local liquor store and I’d certainly recommend it. IPA’s seem like a popular choice among microbrews as they had quite a selection, but the Dogfish Head was the only one that was cold so it was the choice of the day.
I also picked up a Pyramid Apricot Weizen which I’m excited to try. I actually bought it because it might be something my wife will like, but I’ve never had an Apricot beer so I’m curious to see what it tastes like. I should probably wait until I’m sober to give an honest review though so it may need to wait a bit.
