First Brewing Books Arrived
By Mike | April 2, 2007
I bought a bunch of brewing and beer related books off Amazon a week ago, and they finally arrived this weekend. I haven’t had a chance to really get into them yet, but in case you’re interested here’s what I picked up:
- Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide
- I got this because, while I certainly enjoy beer, I don’t know what makes a good beer as opposed to an average beer, other than the rather subjective “I like it” I was hoping this would give me some things to look for and beers to sample. Unfortunately, it looks like most of them are foreign or regional microbrews that I don’t have access to. Still, it was about $12 so I’m sure it will end up being worth it.
- Great American Beer: 50 Brands That Shaped the 20th Century
A bunch of family members were over when the books arrived, and this was the favorite by far. The pure nostalgia was great for the older guys. Most of the beers listed in this book are the type of things that only poor college kids drink anymore, stuff like Old Milwaukee, Old Style, Lone Star and Schlitz, but back in the day, they were a big deal. The book goes into the history and marketing of all these different legendary American beers, dedicating a page or two to each one. The old time beer labels and ads are outstanding. I only bought this book because I needed to spend $5 more to qualify for free shipping, but I’m glad I did. I’ve only just skimmed through it, but it looks to be a great reference.
- The Brewmaster’s Bible: Gold Standard for Home Brewers, The
- This was recommended on a few other brewing sites, so I figured why not? I needed something to get me started. There are a lot more recipes in here than I was expecting, and no so much on the process of how to go about brewing, but I guess there’s only so much you can write about that. Hopefully I’ll have time to start reading this one soon.
- The Complete Joy of Homebrewing Third Edition (Harperresource Book)
- Another book recommended for beginners on a number of sites. This looks to have a few more sections dedicated to the absolute beginners than the Brewmaster’s Bible did. It also has pictures, which will probably be helpful.
So that’s what I bought. Let me know if there are any other good books that I should pick up.
